The trailer for Kraven the Hunter reveals a revamped Rhino with a drastically different design than the villain sported in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
There's more than one classic Spider-Man villain getting a redesign in Kraven The Hunter, with Rhino sporting a different look than in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Played by Alessandro Nivola, the new Rhino makes a quick appearance in the final seconds of the first trailer for Kraven the Hunter, displaying a transformative ability that shows "why they call me The Rhino.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Created by Stan Lee and John Romita Sr. and first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #41, The Rhino was originally a Russian spy named Aleksei Sytsevich, who served as a test subject for an experiment intended to create a new breed of agent. Trapped within a second skin made of nearly unbreakable hide after being given super-strength, Sytsevich rebelled against his handlers to go into business for himself.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had many problems, but its use of the Rhino is considered by many to be the film's low point. Ignoring the anti-climactic ending and the fact that Rhino happily stood by while his hated enemy delivered some inspiring words to a young fan, the film's design for Rhino was too far afield from the characters' origins. While Rhino has sported less organic-looking costumes in the comics, he never outfitted his armor with missiles or guns.
A Human/Animal Hybrid Rhino Is Way Better For Kraven The Rhino in the Kraven the Hunter trailer, who has some undefined ability to grow natural armor, is a much better way of adapting the classic Spider-Man villain than the mech suit seen before. While the idea of changing from a human into an animal form is closer to the backstory of The Lizard than the comic book Rhino, it also matches the primal theme of Kraven's character and his belief that "there is an animal in each one of us.
Moreover, even though Aleksei only has a brief appearance in the trailer, it's clear that the character is being treated as a legitimate threat and not a throw-away joke. While the character isn't known for being terribly bright on the pages of Marvel Comics, his imposing physical abilities do make him an intimidating foe.
