A 65-year-old Korean man was sentenced to 15 months in prison for possessing counterfeit US dollars and Malaysian ringgit notes in Kuala Lumpur. The court heard that the accused was aware the money was fake.
A Korean national, Kim Jongdeok, 65, was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment by the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today after admitting to possessing counterfeit currency last year. Judge Azrul Darus imposed the sentence, which is to be served from the date of Kim's arrest on February 28, 2024. Kim was charged with possessing counterfeit US dollars in three luggage bags, each containing US$100 bills, and Malaysian ringgit banknotes amounting to 1,630 pieces of RM100 and RM50 notes.
The court heard that the accused was aware the money was counterfeit. The alleged offense took place at a condominium in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, on February 28, 2024. The charge was brought under Section 489C of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years.During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor R. Harvind requested a sentence that would serve as a deterrent. Kim, who appeared unrepresented by a lawyer, pleaded for leniency, stating his remorse and desire to return to his home country
