Red hot early and ice cold late was not a recipe for success as the Knicks lost their third consecutive game Friday night.
Playing without Mitchell Robinson, who is sidelined after he had surgery Thursday on his broken right thumb, the Knicks connected on better than 70 percent of their shots in the first half. But Tom Thibodeau’s team missed its starting center’s defensive presence and was outscored 20-4 to start the fourth quarter as the Hawks pulled away for a 139-124 victory at State Farm Arena.
The Knicks trailed by one entering the fourth quarter, but they missed nine of their next 10 shots and Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 12 of his 14 points in the final 12 minutes. “So we don’t have to change. Jericho and Isaiah have been in the rotation and that was one of the things that stood out when we were acquiring those guys, was the rim protection. We felt both were capable.” Thibodeau has said he can turn to Randle at center when matchups dictate a smaller lineup configuration, perhaps opening playing time for Obi Toppin, who scored seven points in 16 minutes Friday.
While the Hawks eventually cooled somewhat, missing seven straight shots, the Knicks kept scoring and finished the quarter with a 38-35 advantage on 80 percent shooting . Randle had 11 points in the period, while Brunson and Barrett netted eight apiece. Toppin, who talked before the game about needing to start getting to the rim again after averaging just 2.2 points over his last six appearances, closed the scoring in the quarter with a baseline dunk.
