All of those interviewed said they see certain segments of the population flouting these SOPs on a daily basis. Siti Norazlina Mohd Zin echoed his view, noting that while there has generally been compliance with SOPs such as wearing face masks, the same could not be said about physical distancing. Crucially, he said, there was no other way to break the chain of infections than to comply with SOPs, such as physical distancing and wearing face masks.Government officials have repeatedly expressed concern over the public’s growing disregard for Covid-19 SOPs, with Noor Hisham pointing out in September that even frontliners have become careless.Alamgir, a 50-year-old Bangladeshi national, said he was perplexed that there are still people not following the government-issued SOPs.

Tan, meanwhile, said the lack of compliance might be due to people’s “lazy” attitude towards the deadly virus or their ignorance about the RM1,000 fines for not observing physical distancing or wearing masks in public. “You know the risks that are involved, but if you choose to take them, so be it. You make your bed, you lie on it,” she said.While she called on enforcement officers to pay more visits to high-traffic areas, housewife Enna hoped the officers would just advise the public about the need to adhere to the SOPs, instead of issuing fines.
