The highway concessionaire, AFA Prime Berhad – formerly known as Anih Berhad – is in the process of finalising the project design before commencing physical construction on-site, deputy works minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said.
“This delay is due to a change in shareholders that has only recently been finalised. According to the concession agreement, the construction period for the KL-Karak Highway widening is four years, and it is expected to be completed by 2029,” said the deputy works minister. The project will also involve the construction of a new two-lane tunnel adjacent to the existing tunnel in the eastbound direction, according to the report. In response to a supplementary question in the Dewan Rakyat on whether the government intends to reduce the current operation of three toll plazas at Karak, Bentong and Gombak to one toll plaza at a suitable location, Ahmad Maslan said that the KL-Karak Highway operates under an open toll system, and any consolidation from three tolls to one would have implications on the prior agreement that was signed.Open roads and closed circuits hold great allure for Mick Chan.
