KL Cathedral to work on being a welcoming parish

The Cathedral of St John the Evangelist is the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur where everyone is welcome to worship and pray. Despite this status, the parish has been labelled as an unwelcoming church.

Acknowledging these shortcomings, the parish will focus on transforming into a hospitable parish. The other two areas of focus are: nurturing a servant leadership and building sustainable relationships. In his address, Archbishop Julian highlighted that the cathedral is unique because of her international community which includes Africans, Burmese, Filipinos, Japanese, South Koreans, and Vietnamese, amongst others. He said that parishioners are the ones who can make a difference in transforming the parish.

On building sustainable relationships, Archbishop Julian said building a relationship with God should be the cornerstone imparted in ministries, especially in the Catechetical Ministry. He pointed out the difference between knowing Jesus at both the head and heart level.
