A KK Mart outlet on the Universiti Malaya campus was vandalized with red paint, sparking renewed attention to the controversy surrounding the sale of ham and cheese sandwiches bearing misused halal logos. The incident raises concerns about campus safety and the potential for escalating tensions due to sensitive religious practices.
A KK Mart outlet on the Universiti Malaya campus was vandalized with red paint early on Monday morning, January 21, 2025, amidst ongoing controversy surrounding the sale of ham and cheese sandwiches bearing misused halal logos. Brickfields police chief ACP Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood confirmed that an employee reported the vandalism to authorities at approximately 12:50am.
The Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) had previously clarified that neither the sandwiches nor their manufacturing company, Shake and Bake Café Sdn Bhd, possessed halal certifications. Despite the supplier's initial claim that the sliced meat used in the sandwiches was certified halal by JAKIM, the religious department emphasized that the halal status does not extend to the entire sandwich if only a component is halal-certified. The incident sparked reactions from various stakeholders. Lim Jing Jet, president of the Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (UMANY), while acknowledging the unclear link between the vandalism and the controversy, condemned such extreme actions, stating that they disrupt social harmony. He emphasized that property vandalism, although seemingly minor, constitutes a violation of the law under Section 425 of the Penal Code. Lim also expressed concerns about campus safety, questioning if a chain convenience store like KK Mart could be vandalized, what threats might other areas and students face. He urged the university administration to strengthen security measures, such as enhancing monitoring facilities and increasing security patrols, to ensure a safer environment.KK Mart, in a statement to SAYS, denied responsibility for the incident, attributing the blame to the supplier, Shake and Bake Café Sdn Bhd. The convenience store chain further stated it was cooperating with authorities to investigate the matter. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also chairs the Malaysian Halal Council, stated that the government would leave it to the authorities to address the issue. The controversy surrounding the halal status of the sandwiches has led to the closure of two KK Mart outlets on the Universiti Malaya campus until further notice. This incident highlights the sensitivity surrounding halal practices in Malaysia and the potential for public outcry when these practices are perceived to be violated
