SHAH ALAM: Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin says he would have reached out to those who were not the party’s traditional supporters had he won the Umno presidency.
The Rembau MP said he would have pushed forward a concept to urbanise Umno to widen the party’s appeal.“If there is a party urbanisation concept, Umno will turn into a party which is capable of competing in urban and suburban areas,’’ said Khairy in Karangkraf Media Group’s Bicara Minda session Monday moderated by veteran journalist Tan Sri Johan Jaaffar.
He added this was important as 75% of Malays now live in urbanised or urban areas and said many of his own constituents lived in cities and came back to vote in Rembau. “And if we can’t get the support from people in the urban areas such as the middle-class and professional groups, Umno has no future,’’ said Khairy, adding he would have looked into this had he become the party president.
Khairy had contested for the Umno president’s post in June last year but lost to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his bid to lead the party.He said when he was eight, he told his diplomat father he had only two career choices – to be a footballer or a politician.
