For the first time, the Captain of the King County Water Taxi is speaking out after steering a runaway barge away from the waterfront earlier this week. The U.S.

A runaway barge caused a stir at the Seattle waterfront Thursday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2023. The U.S. Coast Guard said the barge drifted from Terminal 18 and made contact with Pier 66 in Elliot Bay just before 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Captain Krehbiel said he’s never experienced anything like this in his 30 year career, but he knew he had to make a quick call to use the water taxi to guide the barge elsewhere before it caused more damage. “It was kind of abrupt, it was a hard hit and we kind of bounced off the first time and then I knew I had to push hard on this to stay up against it and start moving it," Krehbiel said.
