The announcement came in the midst of a bad season for royal health. Charles’s daughter-in-law Catherine, the Princess of Wales, recently spent thirteen days in hospital recovering from an unspecified abdominal surgery. She is not likely to return to public duty until after Easter. Last month, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, wrote on Instagram that she has malignant melanoma. Charles’s journey was remarkably swift.
Last year, Charles attended an impressive four hundred and twenty-five royal events, second only to his sister, Princess Anne, who attended four hundred and fifty-seven. The King’s presence will be missed. With Catherine still recovering, younger royals are thin on the ground. Some hoped that Charles’s news would lead to a reconciliation between his sons, William, the Prince of Wales, and Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex.
