Kindred showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins breaks down some of the changes he made to Octavia E. Butler's iconic sci-fi novel in preparation for his new FXNetworks series, now streaming on hulu:
Octavia E. Butler's seminal sci-fi novel Kindred has made its way to the small screen, thanks to the tireless efforts of showrunner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. A celebrated writer himself, having won an Obie Award in 2014 for his plays Appropriate and An Octoroon, Jacobs-Jenkins is also a lifelong aficionado of Butler's work. Though it has taken many more years than he originally envisioned, his fresh take on the time-traveling epic is now an FX series available to stream on Hulu.
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins: Who knows why the stars ever align, right? I think in some funny ways, I'd have loved this to happen six years ago, yes. But in some ways, this feels like the right time because Octavia Butler herself has kind of mainstreamed in this really profound way. I think people are more primed and more sophisticated viewers now of the show, which I'm super thrilled about.
By the end, I think the dream is that we do have a series about a married couple. Can we really get these guys married over the course of a series? That's kind of the challenge. Dana is the center of the narrative, and she has a heavy weight on her shoulders in terms of carrying the series and in terms of what she's literally going through. What was it about Mallori that really spoke to you?
You've also worked on Watchmen and Outer Range, which both echo these themes of racial tensions and supernatural family bonds. Is that something that generally speaks to you in sci-fi, and did you take anything from those projects for Kindred? How long of a series do you envision Kindred being, and how much further beyond the scope of the novel do you think that you could go?
