Samara Cox faces a five-hour round trip from her home at Djarindjin into Broome each time she needs to go to the bank, and tells a meeting of banks, financial counsellors and regulators that something needs to change.
Ms Johnson said it had expanded to a discussion about elder financial abuse , internet connectivity and financial literacy in the region.
"We will be focusing on the elder financial abuse, and working on doing some consultation that is going to really connect with the elders and consult with them and find from the grassroots level about what they see as an answer to financial elder abuse," she said. The Better Banking for Indigenous Customers Project from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission in June found 110,000 customers were in high-fee accounts, despite being eligible for a low-fee account.
"In some cases, people have gone to their bank and found an unwillingness from some staff, or just confusion about what the legal process is," she said. "So I think when you're sitting around the table and people are giving real life experiences, you can identify where more needs to be done."
