Primary care doctors should screen all children for anxiety starting at age 8, under a medical task force recommendation issued this week that experts say underscores the growing mental health challenges facing young people.

"Nationwide, too many young people, too many children, too many teens are experiencing mental health conditions," said Dr. Martha Kubik, co-author of the recommendations, in a

Support and effective treatments are available at clinics, hospitals and other organizations across the Houston region and beyond.A 2019 survey found that nearly 8% of children between ages 3 and 17 had a current anxiety disorder, though Kubik said that number may have doubled since the pandemic. Dr. Katherine Gallagher, a pediatric psychologist at Texas Children's Hospital, said she was not surprised by the recommendation for increased anxiety screening in younger children.

"After the pandemic we are seeing a lot higher rates of anxiety and higher anxiety in younger children," she said. "Having an untreated anxiety disorder can make it harder for kids to do the things that are important to them at different ages, such as trying their best at school, making new friends, sleeping well, speaking up for themselves and lots of other things," she said.
