Kia expands its GT lineup beyond the EV6 with the new EV3 GT, EV4 GT, and EV5 GT, focusing on driving engagement and family practicality rather than outright power. These models feature added rear motors, sporty styling cues, and the innovative Virtual Gear Shift system to mimic a manual transmission experience, all while retaining physical controls and fast charging capability.
Kia Malaysia may have been quieter on the electric vehicle front recently, but the Korean automaker maintains a broad global EV lineup. During a recent trip to South Korea, we experienced a different facet of this lineup: the new Kia EV3 GT, EV4 GT, and EV5 GT.
Traditionally, the GT badge signifies high performance, as seen with the Kia EV6 GT, which boasts over 570 horsepower and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. However, these new GT models take a distinct approach. Instead of focusing on extreme power or the quickest acceleration, Kia has engineered these electric vehicles to make everyday driving more engaging while preserving the practicality expected from a family car.
The EV3 SUV and EV4 (offered as a sedan and hatchback) were originally developed as sensible C-segment EVs, each powered by a single front-mounted motor producing approximately 150 kW (201 hp). The larger EV5 is available globally with either a 160 kW (215 hp) single-motor setup or a 230 kW (308 hp) dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration.
For the GT versions, Kia adds a 70 kW rear motor to the EV3 and EV4, raising total system output to 215 kW (288 hp) and 468 Nm of torque. The EV5 GT also features a dual-motor AWD system, delivering 225 kW (301 hp) and 480 Nm of torque. On paper, these performance figures appear fairly typical for twin-motor EVs, which aligns with Kia's goal to create everyday family cars that offer casual fun on demand.
All three GT models come equipped with suede sports seats exclusive to the GT trim, 20-inch wheels, and an 81.4 kWh 400V NMC battery. The EV3 GT and EV4 GT support DC fast charging at up to 128 kW, while the EV5 GT accepts a DC charging rate of up to 151 kW. All three can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes, with AC charging available in either 11 kW or 22 kW depending on the market.
Visually, the GT models do not stray drastically from their GT-Line counterparts. The most noticeable differentiators are the bright lime green accents found on components such as the brake calipers and GT badges. Inside, lime green details appear on seat belts, the steering wheel center stripe, and seats. Even the dedicated GT button on the steering wheel features the same signature lime green finish reminiscent of the EV6 GT.
Pressing the GT button transforms the driving character. Besides the sportier GT interface in the instrument cluster, the steering firms up, throttle response sharpens, and the suspension tightens. The standout feature, however, is Virtual Gear Shift (VGS). Once activated, the typical EV range meter is replaced by a virtual tachometer.
At a standstill, the car even simulates an idle at around 800-900 rpm, accompanied by a subtle engine rumble through the speakers. Though entirely artificial, it is a surprisingly entertaining gimmick upon first experience. The paddle shifters, which normally adjust regenerative braking, become manual gear selectors in VGS mode. Flicking a paddle produces a distinct interruption in power before the next virtual gear engages, complete with a slight jolt similar to a conventional gearbox.
If the driver neglects to upshift in manual mode, the virtual rev limiter caps acceleration. In GT mode, the simulated six-speed gearbox revs all the way to 7,200 rpm, encouraging the driver to work through the gears as they would in a performance petrol car. Although the system is synthetic, it is remarkably convincing and enhances engagement, especially on twisty roads. On extended highway drives, however, the constant virtual engine soundtrack can become monotonous.
Fortunately, Kia provides a shortcut button on the steering wheel to toggle VGS on or off quickly, allowing for a quiet EV experience when desired. Another appreciated aspect is Kia's commitment to retaining physical controls. Functions such as regenerative braking, drive modes, climate controls, and media shortcuts all have dedicated buttons and toggles rather than being hidden within touchscreen menus-a design choice many automakers are abandoning, making Kia's approach commendable.
For drivers who wish to record performance, the GT EVs also include Launch Control and a Performance Timer that measures 0-100 km/h, 200-meter, and 400-meter runs. Kia revealed that these GT models received revised suspension tuning, including changes to spring rates, dampers, and sharper steering calibration. The suspension is firmer than that of the standard models but not harsh or uncomfortable. Importantly, the cars remain comfortable enough for daily family use.
They are composed during commuting yet capable of delivering exciting thrills on more engaging roads. After our brief time behind the wheel, it is evident that Kia is not simply creating a smaller EV6 GT. Instead, the brand is offering a distinct interpretation of the GT ethos: performance that enhances everyday driving enjoyment without sacrificing practicality
