Eating eggs can reduce someone's risk of developing a chronic eye condition that causes vision loss. 9News
About one million Australians have age-related macular degeneration which is the leading cause of legal blindness in the country.
Researchers found that eating two to four eggs a week had a 49 per cent reduced risk of developing late stage macular degeneration compared to consuming less than one egg a week. Researchers analysed egg consumption and macular degeneration patterns of more than 2,000 participants aged over 49 in the Blue Mountains Eye Study.
"Another really important message that came out of the study is consumption of two to four eggs was also associated with around a 62 per cent reduced risk of developing wet or neovascular form of macular degeneration and that's the form of AMD that's associated with sudden and rapid vision loss," said Associate Professor Bamini Gopinath, an epidemiologist at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research.
Dr Gopinath said eggs are a rich source of antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which are naturally occuring in the back of the eye and can minimise oxidative stress and inflammation.Related Articles
