Scarbinsky shares a birthday with both legendary UAB coach Gene Bartow and his son Murry, and joked that perhaps he was destined to write about basketball in Birmingham. The announcement of his USBWA Hall of Fame election comes in the same week that Birmingham will host UAB in the NIT at Bartow Arena on Tuesday and both Alabama and Auburn in the NCAA tournament at Legacy Arena on Thursday .
