Ride Along, the action-comedy starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, experiences a viewership resurgence and lands on the Netflix global top 10.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Ride Along is experiencing a resurgence on streaming. The movie, which was released in theaters on January 17, 2014, ended up earning $134 million at the domestic box office and became the 21st highest-grossing movie of the year in the U.S., just behind Neighbors and Gone Girl.
Per Netflix's global top 10 chart, the world is showing off a renewed interest in Ride Along. For the week of July 17 through July 23, the movie landed at No. 6 on the chart, with 4.3 million views accruing a total of 7.1 million viewing hours between them. Nearly a decade after the fact, this shows the continued star power of Hart, whose more recent projects include Die Hart, Netflix's Me Time, and DC League of Super-Pets.
Is There A Future For The Ride Along Franchise? Ride Along was so successful in 2014 that it earned a sequel. Ride Along 2, which premiered in 2016, reunited Ice Cube and Kevin Hart with director Tim Story and follows more action-packed shenanigans occurring in the lead-up to Ben's wedding. The movie earned $124.6 million at the box office, but its increased budget of $40 million gave it a much slimmer profit margin than the $25 million original.
However, with this resurgence in interest in the franchise, it's possible that Ride Along 3 could be greenlit sooner than later. According to a recent quote from Ice Cube , creators have been working behind the scenes to find a solid concept for a new movie. However, the possibility of a Ride Along 3 is complicated by Hart's busy schedule.
Although the strike has halted many projects that are currently in production, Hart's busy schedule will likely resume as soon as a deal is made. The star is currently in post-production on movies including F. Gary Gray's Lift and Eli Roth's Borderlands, in addition to a heap of titles either in pre-production or development. However, if Ride Along's success continues to grow on Netflix, Hart may be convinced to carve out some time in his schedule to keep the franchise going.
