“The system is so corrupted in so many ways that the lack of trust that we see in the political realm today would’ve carried over regardless,” he said. In some ways former state Sen. Donald Huffines of Dallas and former Texas GOP Chairman Allen West have already impacted Texas politics. The specter of their primary candidacies, analysts say, helped push Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the Legislature to the hard-right corners of state politics. Last year lawmakers approved a slew of controversial legislation, including a restrictive anti-abortion law that provides no exceptions for rape or incest.
Some analysts say giving credit to Huffines and West for what happened last year is too generous. Republican political consultant Vinny Minchillo says Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is more responsible for last year’s dive right.shows him leading the primary field with 60% support. West and Huffines are in single digits.
