Early this month the World Health Organization ended Covid-19’s status as a public health emergency of international concern. This has been in place since January 30, 2020 so understandably there was a collective sigh of relief from people of all nations, including here in the Philippines, whose lives have changed drastically while dealing and living with the virus. Even I can’t help but recall the early days of the pandemic when I was infected, got very sick and was hospitalized.
Department of Health Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire was quick to clarify that what the WHO did was only to lift the public health emergency of international concern status of Covid-19 and not a declaration that the pandemic is over. The announcement of the WHO did not come as much of a surprise anymore—our economy is back on track, our doors are open again to tourists and most of the businesses are back to pre-pandemic operations.
It appears that the current rise in the number of new cases has something to do with the new Omicron subvariant named Arcturus, which experts have described as being able to evade immunity and is more contagious than the previous variants. OCTA Research says the positivity rate in the country is now at 23.6 percent and that this could go up to 25 percent in Metro Manila. However, the organization did note that it does not expect health care utilization to reach critical levels.
