The Kedah Menteri Besar has expressed his concern over the current floor price of RM1,300 per metric ton for paddy, stating that it is insufficient to cover the production costs incurred by farmers. He has urged the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to address the issue and ensure a fair price for local farmers.
The Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor, urged the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) to address the grievances faced by farmers due to the current floor price of RM1,300 per metric ton for paddy. Sanusi pointed out that this price is significantly lower than the cost incurred by farmers for cultivating their rice paddies, particularly with the escalating costs of agricultural inputs such as seeds, pesticides, and fertilizers.
He emphasized that the RM1,300 price point fails to cover the average production cost of paddy per hectare, which is estimated to be around RM1,600. Moreover, farmers have to wait for six months to harvest their crops. Sanusi deemed the farmers' demand for RM1,800 a reasonable one, as the current price does not even return their investment.The matter has also raised public queries regarding the disparity between the low paddy procurement price and the high cost of imported rice that consumers are accustomed to. Sanusi questioned why the price of paddy remains at RM1,300 when consumers are used to paying over RM40 for 10 kilograms of imported rice due to the lack of local rice supply. He further questioned the rationale behind the price discrepancy, suggesting that it may be linked to selling locally harvested rice as imported rice. In light of this, Sanusi urged the relevant ministers to reconsider the paddy floor price and explore solutions, including consulting with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Economy to resolve the issue
