Kedah likely to dissolve state govt on June 26

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah government is seeking to dissolve its legislative assembly on June 26 to pave the way for state polls.

It is learnt that Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor will seek an audience with Kedah's Sultan Sallehuddin Almarhum Sultan Badlishah on June 25 to seek consent to dissolve the state legislative assembly.He said choosing the exact date was based on several factors including the fasting month, Aidilfitri celebrations, the Haj season and the Aidiladha celebrations.

Penang and Kelantan have announced that their state assemblies will dissolve on June 28 and June 22 respectively, while Negri Sembilan is expected to do so on June 30. A total of 36 seats will be up for grabs in the coming Kedah polls, which are likely to be held in August. PAS has the most seats with 15, followed by Bersatu , PKR , Amanah and two each for Umno, DAP and Pejuang.

The Gurun state seat is vacant after its assemblyman Datuk Johari Abdul stepped down before he was elected Dewan Rakyat Speaker on Dec 19, 2022.
