The road-weary Clippers whittle what had been a 21-point first-half deficit to one in the fourth quarter, but Bam Adebayo and Miami hold on to hand the hosts a 110-100 defeat.
LOS ANGELES — Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said he knew what his team needed to do to stop Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo. Slow him down. Clog up the middle. Take away the easy baskets.
And if it wasn’t Adebayo, it was Victor Oladipo or Tyler Herro who gave the Clippers’ weary defense problems. “I think the biggest thing is just being better defensively,” Lue said. “Like I talked about earlier, offensively, we know we can score the basketball. We have some great scorers, but now just defensively that mindset every single night, understanding the rotations, understanding that we need to be better one-on-one at the point of attack and things like that.
The Clippers, however, came out of halftime visibly energized and outscored the Heat 25-8 to start the third quarter to pull within one 75-74 with 4:12 left.
