Pragalathan Kasinathan, a kavadi maker in Penang, shares his decade-long journey of passion and dedication to crafting these intricate religious structures for Thaipusam. He emphasizes the importance of love for God and meticulous craftsmanship, highlighting the emotional and spiritual significance behind his work.

For Pragalathan Kasinathan, a hobby has blossomed into a profound commitment to serving his faith. At 18, he began crafting kavadis with friends, but a decade ago, his passion for creating these intricate structures took on a deeper significance, driven by the spirit of Thaipusam. Now, 43-year-old Pragalathan finds himself in high demand, especially in the days leading up to the festival. Devotees facing last-minute kavadi shortages reach out to him, seeking his assistance.

Pragalathan, ever compassionate, invites them to his workshop at the MPKK office in Paya Terubong, where he offers a selection of already-made kavadis. 'They don't get to choose as these are some kavadis I made earlier,' he explains, 'but I do not charge them anything extra. It's for God, as they need to fulfill their vows.' Kavadis, ranging from RM1,200 to RM1,800 for simpler designs, can reach up to RM2,500 for elaborate ones. Pragalathan handles the creation process, leaving the final fitting to his customers. 'It's a delicate job because they are made from styrofoam and must be handled carefully,' he says, emphasizing his willingness to help even in 'emergencies.' The crafting process itself is a testament to dedication, taking three weeks to complete. It involves meticulous drawing, cutting, and painting, all done after their regular jobs. 'Due to manpower, time, and financial constraints, I limit myself to 15 kavadis,' he confesses. 'One needs passion and love of God to make kavadis, as each is crafted meticulously to have a divine and attractive look when carried by the devotee,' he adds, revealing the heart of his calling. Pragalathan's commitment extends beyond creating these religious artifacts. He finds joy in involving his 9-year-old daughter, Subhiksha, in the process, nurturing a sense of faith and tradition in the younger generation. Assisted by T.Pavithran, 24, they work diligently at the Paya Terubong Village Community Management Council (MPKK) Hall, ensuring that each kavadi is imbued with the utmost care and reverence. The finished products, a dazzling array of colors and intricate carvings, are priced between RM800 and RM3,500 depending on the complexity, a testament to the artistry and devotion poured into each creation
