New York Mets pitcher Justin Verlander throws against the Detroit Tigers in the first inning of a baseball game, Thursday, May 4, 2023, in Detroit. In his first appearance with the New York Mets, Justin Verlander gave up back-to-back home runs in the first inning but settled down to allow just two runs in five innings against the Tigers on Thursday afternoon.
The encouraging news for the 40-year-old righthander was that his velocity was good. Since he joined the Astros in 2017, his four-seam fastball has averaged between 94 and 95 mph. On Thursday, he threw 37 four-seamers and averaged 95 mph with the pitch, topping out at 96.6. On his 34 sliders, he averaged 88 mph, which is also on par with what he’d been throwing in Houston.
