Justin Bieber said he's experiencing facial paralysis and we wish him a speedy recovery.
Weakness and facial paralysis in particular can make it difficult to close the eye on the affected side of the face and to eat, per the NLM, since feelings of weakness, stiffness, or numbness can cause food to fall out of the mouth. Additionally, it can make it hard for people with the condition to move their face and make facial expressions, and it can also cause drooping of the facial muscles.
A blood test for the varicella-zoster virus can help doctors determine if someone has Ramsay Hunt syndrome, according to the NLM. Oral steroids and antiviral medications are typically used to treat the condition. If a person with Ramsay Hunt experiences, their provider may suggest certain medications to treat that symptom specifically, and painkillers may also be needed to manage the condition.
If the affected nerve isn’t badly damaged, a person can typically recover within weeks, per the NLM. However, if the damage caused by the virus is severe, symptoms may persist indefinitely. Bieber said he’s expecting to make a full recovery in his Instagram video. “I’m going to get better. I’m doing all these facial exercises to get my face back to normal, and it will get back to normal. It’s just time. We don’t know how much time it’s going to be, but it’s going to be okay. I have hope.
