Justin Bibb was sworn in as Cleveland's 58th mayor in a ceremony just after midnight on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022.
when he soundly defeated Kevin Kelley in November. Bibb’s mother, Charlene Nichols, held the Bible as he took the oath of office.
The ceremony took place in front of about 20 guests and a dozen members of the media at the East 131st Street branch of the Cleveland Public Library, the library Bibb frequented growing up in Cleveland. “As a poor black boy from the southeast side who was 10 years old trying to find my way into a very complicated world, this place was my refuge,” Bibb said as he spoke fondly of the library.
Bibb’s first act as Cleveland’s newest mayor was to swear in his legal counsel, Mark Griffin. More members of Bibb’s administration will be sworn in this morning. “Change is not coming from Washington any time soon, it’s not, it’s going to come from cities like Cleveland, Boston, Tulsa, and New York, and as your mayor, I’m sure we are going to lead the way,” Bibb said as he addressed the guests in attendance.on Saturday, Jan. 8, in the Public Auditorium’s Music Hall in downtown Cleveland. The ceremony was switched to virtual because of concerns about the rapidly spreading COVID-19 coronavirus.
