Jury selection set to begin for NXIVM trial, which is expected to detail sensational allegations that a cult-like group based in upstate New York recruited sex slaves for its spiritual leader.
FILE - In this Dec. 6, 2018, file photo, television actress Allison Mack leaves federal court in New York. Jury selection is set to begin for a trial featuring sensational allegations that a cult-like group based in upstate New York turned women into sex slaves who were branded with the initials of its spiritual leader. Prosecutors say the purported self-help group called NXIVM formed a secret society of women who had unwanted sex with guru Keith Raniere.
Court papers allege the purported self-help group called NXIVM formed a secret society of women who were branded with Raniere's initials and forced to have sex with him. The four defendants have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and other charges. Defense attorneys have insisted any relationship between Raniere and the alleged victims, including an unidentified actress and other women expected to testify against him at trial, was consensual.
Two other women charged in the case, former NXIVM executive Nancy Salzman and her daughter, Lauren, have already pleaded guilty.
