Less than four hours after hearing closing arguments in the murder trial of Porter Township resident Karen Sons, the jury found her guilty Monday afternoon of murdering her live-in boyfriend Robert Head, who was 54, in their Lake Eliza home on Dec. 8, 2017.

“We are upset by the verdict,” Jesse Harper, one of Sons’ defense attorneys, said via text after the verdict. “We always believed that there were too many unanswered questions regarding the shooting, and we firmly believe Karen acted in self-defense; however, the jury did not agree and believed the state had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

He spent considerable time laying out the timeline of Sons’ cellphone call log. She made 12 calls to her ex-boyfriend David Parrish between Dec. 8, the day of Head’s death, and Dec. 10, the day she reported his death to police. Salinas reminded the jury that Parrish’s cellphone records show him arriving at Sons’ home at 7:43 p.m. on Dec. 8. Cell tower records show he left again by 8:10 p.m. and arrived at home by 8:23 p.m.

“She states he died right there in the kitchen/living room area. Tells the police she never moved the body,” Salinas told the jury. He reminded them that police testimony during the trial contended the body had been moved. Harper told the jury that Head was angry and upset on the day of his death after being in court because his dogs had bitten the neighbors’ dog. He reminded the jury that the neighbor had asked the judge that morning to take Head’s dogs away.
