Since 2014, the number of jump scares per movie has declined precipitously. But why? The Department of Data investigates.
As Halloween approaches, it’s getting scary out there. To understand what has changed since 2014, we investigated how jump scares doubled in density between the 1970s and 2014. Indeed, 27 of those remakes contained more jump scares than the originals, we found. But that trend has reversed in recent years. The timing of the decrease suggested another suspect.
