We chat with AmericanCarnage director Diego Hallivis, as well as his brother and co-writer Julio Hallivis, about balancing horror and comedy in their new film and working with rising star Jenna Ortega:
American Carnage is a timely social horror-thriller hailing from the minds of Julio and Diego Hallivis. The film centers on children of undocumented immigrants offered the chance to regain their citizenship by working at an eldercare facility, only to learn of a dark secret behind the facility.
Julio Hallivis: Watching the separation of families, the border and all that stuff, it was tough for us, I think it was tough for everyone with the issue of immigration. So we wanted to do something cool, something funny, but also that has a message, but we didn't want to be too preachy with it. We wanted to do something that starts a conversation while you also enjoy watching it.
With that said, then what was it like finding that right balance of the horror thrills and levity with your message? I wish there was a graph that you could point to and be like,"Alright, make a joke right here and then you have a jump scare right here.
Like you said, Allen Maldonado being an Afro Latino or Black Latino, that was one of the lines that — when they're being questioned by the police in that little montage and he's asking,"Am I here because I'm Black or because I'm Latino?" That was a line that wasn't in the script, that on the day he was like,"Hey, I think I should say this," and that was amazing.
Yeah, I'm excited to see where she goes next. Another thing I love about American Carnage is its look, there's really quite a great style to it. I love when Jorge Lendeborg Jr. spells out not his name and I love the edited one-take during the riot near the end. What was it like developing the look and style for the film?
Now this will run after the movie comes out, so I do want to get into some spoilers. That twist is bonkers, in a great way. How did you come up with that? I couldn't agree more. I love the design work on Jenna and Jorge, when they're half old and half young, what was it like working with the makeup effects team to really find that right look?
