OPINION: Julian Leeser’s resignation from the frontbench hurts the one last thing the Federal Liberals had going: unity
Until Tuesday, the one thing Peter Dutton and the Liberals had going for them was unity. Despite being well down in the polls and making history for all the wrong reasons by losing the Aston byelection, there remained a united front.of attorney-general and Indigenous affairs, so he can campaign for the Voice to parliament, changes all that.
Henceforth, he will argue against Dutton and other members of the Coalition who claim the “Canberra voice” will create a legal and bureaucratic quagmire that will divide the nation. Plenty of fine legal minds like Robert French, Brett Walker and Anne Twomey disagree with this assessment and if he doesn’t get his way, Leeser will still advocate for a Yes vote.altogether in protest against that party’s outright opposition to the Voice.Dutton and others explained it away as Leeser being particularly invested in an issue he has championed for a decade, and that his defection is absolutely consistent with the traditions of the Liberal Party.
Leeser, whose stance will help him keep his once-safe northern Sydney seat of Berowra from the teals, is likely to join other high-profile backbench colleagues such as Andrew Bragg and Bridget Archer when the official “Liberals for Yes” campaign begins.
