Julia Reichert, the Filmmaker Who Won an Oscar for Best Documentary, Is Battling Terminal Cancer
Reichert and Bognar dated for 10 years before they started working together and even studied cancer as part of their work. Their 2006 filmfollows the lives of five children with cancer. In 2007, it won a Primetime Emmy Award for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking.
Reichert and Bognar's two rules for working together are that they don't talk about work in bed, and they don't talk about work after they start drinking, Reichert shared with Terry Gross onGross also asked Reichert about her cancer , and she spoke about it albeit very briefly."I was diagnosed with cancer about a year and a half ago now, and I fought it, and it went away. But then it came back, in a small spot.
Urothelial cells line the urethra, bladder, ureters, renal pelvis, among other organs. Bladder cancer is one of the most common cancers, affecting 68,000 people in the United States,Speaking on stage tonight about her win for Best Documentary, Reichert said: “Our film tries to ask questions about the fate of working people in Ohio, in China and really around the world. The kind of people that punch a clock, put on a uniform and work for an hourly rage.
Reichert then thanked the factories included in the documentary for"trusting us to bear witness to their hard work and fight for a decent life." She also thanked her fellow nominees and offered"huge hugs."Even though she may be a new power figure to the masses, her work goes back to 1971, when she debuted a groundbreaking feminist documentary, made just after she graduated from Antioch College.
