A panel of judges has temporarily blocked a new requirement passed by state Republican lawmakers that would cut the Democratic-leaning city of Nashville’s Metropolitan Council in half, from 40 members to 20.
FILE - The Nashville, Tenn., skyline is shown July 11, 2022. Nashville officials on Monday, March 13, 2023, sued over a new Tennessee law that will cut the Democratic-leaning city's metro council in half, a move that follows the councils rejection of efforts to host the 2024 Republican National Convention in Music City.
Three state court trial judges — one from Nashville, one from Shelby County and one in Athens, Tennessee — agreed, saying there is a “compelling public interest in preserving the integrity of the Metro election process that is already underway.” Wally Dietz, the law director for Nashville's city-county government, which is seeking to overturn the new law, said in a statement that Nashville officials are"grateful that the court issued an injunction based on its unanimous finding that Metro is likely to succeed on our claim that the Legislature violated the Constitution by changing the rules for Metro alone in the middle of an election.
