SANTA CRUZ — Community member Abi Mustapha, standing at the front of a room whose occupants sat packed shoulder-to-shoulder behind her Friday, told Brandon Bochat and Hagan Warner that they were a part of the Santa Cruz community, even though they had hurt her.
Hagan Warner, right, watches Thomas Sage Pederson give a victim’s statement on Friday as his co-defendant Brandon Bochat, far left, looks away during Friday’s sentencing of Warner by Judge Syda Colgiati. Black Lives Matter mural artist Abi Mustapha speaks on the steps of the Santa Cruz County Superior Courthouse following Friday’s sentencing. Mustapha was among some 18 people who addressed the two men during a lengthy criminal court sentencing hearing for Bochat and Warner in Santa Cruz County Superior Court. The event drew some five dozen attendees, forcing the opening of an adjacent courtroom and a video live stream for spillover attendees.
Santa Cruz City Councilman Justin Cummings, who was serving as the city’s first Black male mayor when the artwork was unanimously approved by the body in 2020, said during Friday’s hearing that it is often said that racism doesn’t exist in the city, that it is an inclusive community. The vandalism, he said, painted a different picture.
