A federal judge dismissed the case of a woman asserting U.S. citizenship in an effort to return from Syria after joining Islamic State
On Thursday, Judge Reggie Walton of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled that 25-year-old Hoda Muthana, who traveled to Syria in 2014, joined the terrorist group and gave birth to a son, isn’t a U.S. citizen.Attorneys from the Constitutional Law Center for Muslims in America represented Ahmed Ali Muthana, the father of Ms. Muthana, on her and her son’s behalf.
Ms. Muthana’s U.S. passport was revoked in 2016 during the Obama administration, which said it had been issued “illegally, fraudulently or erroneously.” Upon learning his daughter had traveled to Syria, Mr. Muthana contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which advised that any assistance he provided her would be a violation of U.S. law. He received similar guidance when his daughter contacted him in late 2018 seeking to escape Syria. Mr. Muthana’s attorneys sought a ruling on the legality of providing funds to the refugee camp where his daughter and grandson are located. Judge Walton declined to issue such a ruling.
