Always considered the “heart of Jersey City,” Journal Square has had a rich history of serving the entire city’s retail, entertainment and transportation needs. The “Square” -- for decades the “city center” -- fell into a 40-year downward spiral beginning in the early 1980s and ending when KRE broke ground for the first tower of Journal Squared in 2014.
The Journal Square 2060 Redevelopment Plan has proved to be a remarkable success for the city’s Central Business District . The plan, built around “smart growth” principles, now encompasses approximately 233 acres in the heart of the city. The private sector is doing its job in the Square moving redevelopment forward at an unheard-of pace. But the plan, now in its 30th year, is at that point where some of the broad goals of the original plan should be prioritized.
On the plus side, it was the first new office tower to be built in the Square in decades and it created a modern transportation center for the PATH and over 30 bus lines. The success of the 2060 Plan has now changed the Square’s trajectory in dramatic fashion and the Transportation Center is a very big part of this success.
To be sure, a large undertaking like the planning, funding and construction of a new JSTC is not done overnight. That process will take years once the planning process is started. But that planning process should be prioritized by local leadership and should include the active participation of residents and businesses in greater Journal Square.
