ELKHART LAKE – Josef Newgarden got his redemption and his second Road America victory while Alexander Rossi got more of the same.
Rossi started on the pole and was looking to bookend a 43-race, three-year winless streak with a second Road America victory but couldn’t keep up on the final restart. “It’s ultimately a good day. Josef certainly had a little better base than us and it took us until the last stint to dial in the balance of the car and then we were coming back on him pretty quickly. I don’t think we could have beat him, but all in all it’s a good day.”
Will Power, who won in IndyCar’s return to Road America in 2016, got clobbered from behind by rookie Devlin DeFrancesco on the downhill run to Turn 5 and spun into the wall on the eighth lap. Power was able to continue.
