Jordan Peele's 'Us' is a rare win for original movies
AvatarI have long felt that, exceptions here and there aside, 2009 was the last year when original, star-driven vehicles had a fighting chance and weren't considered exceptions to the rule. Year by year, bit by bit, IP and nostalgia took over the industry, coupled with 3D as an overseas booster and ' mega-success sending Hollywood into a feverish hunt for their own cinematic universes.
This, in turn, allowed Netflix and TV to fill in the gaps and now the successful outright original live-action feature is a glorified endangered species. Yes, would still have been a big deal in 2009 . But its mere existence, even in the comparatively safe genre of high concept horror, as a successful live-action movie that had no source material would have merely made it somewhat par for the course.to a far greater extent versus the other elements.
It's sadly no coincidence that, among my 1,311 participants, only 79 chose Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke as the biggest motivators for seeing this weekend. Nyong'o may score another Oscar nomination, but she isn't any more of a"butts in the seats" draw than any other would-be"new" movie star. But as we work our way back, remember, as always, vote with your wallet.
