A member of the Texans’ practice squad, Akins was a gameday elevation for the third time this season, and for the third consecutive game, he made a critical play that helped put the Texans in a position to win. This time, the play happened in the fourth quarter on third-and-10 from the Jaguars’ 38-yard line with about six minutes left. The game was tied 6-6 at the time, and the Texans needed a score. Akins caught a pass from quarterback Davis Mills and gained a first down, preserving a drive that would eventually end in a game-winning touchdown run.
That play was critical for multiple reasons. Before that, the Texans had struggled in those third-down situations. Mills was 4-for-11 for 46 yards and an interception on third downs in the fourth quarter through four games.Akins has seven catches for 86 yards and a touchdown in three games. His 86 yards receiving leads the Texans’ tight end room. Akins began the year on the New York Giants’ roster, but was cut in training camp. The Texans signed him to their practice squad two months ago.
He’s been elevated the maximum of three times now. If the Texans want him on the gameday roster again, they’ll have to sign him.
