A 37-year-old local property agent from Johor Bahru was duped out of RM85,000 (USDT20,000) in a cryptocurrency investment scam involving a non-existent hotel construction project in Pattaya, Thailand. He was approached by two foreign men aged 35 and 39 in March and promised a one percent ownership stake in the project worth USD10,000. After transferring the USDT20,000, the victim received no returns. Police are also investigating a separate case where a 48-year-old hairdresser lost more than RM20,000 to a similar WhatsApp investment scam.

Katanya, mangsa ditawarkan pelaburan itu oleh dua suspek lelaki warga asing berusia 35 dan 39 tahun untuk pembinaan projek hotel di Pattaya, pada Mac lalu. “Pada 8 julai lalu, mangsa telah memindahkan mata wang kripto sebanyak USDT20,000 ke pemilik akaun suspek bagi tujuan itu. Raub berkata, mangsa membuat laporan polis di Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah JBS dan pihaknya juga menerima laporan berkaitan pelaburan tidak wujud melibatkan seorang pendandan rambut yang diperdaya sehingga kerugian lebih RM20,000.
