JOHOR BARU: The Johor Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) has seized more than half a million ringgit worth of wood imported from China.

Maqis director Nur Afifah A. Rahman said the 104,300kg of Dwarf Small-leaf birch wood, worth RM542,286, was found in four containers at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas at around 2.30pm on Thursday .“Upon further inspection, we found that the wood had not undergone the necessary heat treatment to rid it of pests and disease.

“The case is being investigated under Section 15 and 15 of the Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011," she said in a statement Friday . Nur Afifah said that those found guilty may face imprisonment of up to seven years and fines of up to RM150,000. She added that Maqis would continue to carry out thorough inspections and enforcement on all imports of agriculture into the country.
