It was a surreal sight on Tuesday: A smiling Johnny Depp walking the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival 2023, signing autographs, taking selfies and hugging screaming fans. Just like old times.
Don’t bet on it. A love parade from the French can’t save a down-and-out Hollywood career, even if he’s no longer a pariah. That sleazy spectacle arrived after another legal circus in 2020, when the actor lost a libel case in the UK against The Sun newspaper, which in 2018 had called him a “wife beater.”Johnny Depp walked to red carpet ahead of the Cannes Film Festival debut of “Jeanne du Barry.”As a result of Heard’s allegations, Disney booted in 2018 Depp from future “Pirates” films, in which he played Captain Jack Sparrow.Outside of a couple small projects, his reign in Hollywood looked dead.
