‘Canadians were perfectly able to notice that LEDs last longer than CFLs and don’t force the dog to leave the room if they break’

It’s funny the places a lightbulb can go on over your head. Like a huge hardware store lightbulb display where you suddenly realize government is so dumb it’s dangerous. Why else would our houses be full of mercury-bomb compact fluorescent bulbs?

So why did the government tell us all to use them four years ago, and hand them out “free,” instead of just pricing energy at a level that made incandescents unattractive and letting us choose? As we evidently have with LEDs anyway. See, with just a few last-forever CFLs still flickering and one lonely spare, the rest safely disposed of by the hazardous household waste volunteers, I wandered baffled as a clod into a range of attractive options in a commercial establishment. How strange.

The final straw, with the camel already prostrate, was trying to determine what our lone remaining CFL was good for besides chemical warfare. In desperate quest of a hobby I’ve been sorting my vintage lightbulbs and learning the mysteries of E12 and G16.5. And the remaining CFL, an E26 A19, says 11W on the base. So is it 40 or 60 Watt equivalent?

Exaggerated claims were also made about their longevity. Plus they warmed up slowly, gave a light too sickly for Minas Morgul, didn’t work with dimmer switches and the government made us buy them without having proper disposal plans, helping poison landfills. Great.
