The Cork writer and director skewers a succession of horror tropes in this tale of murder and mystery
Film John Maguire: Irish director Damian McCarthy delivers a sucker punch with Oddity Oddity, the latest film from Cork writer and director Damian McCarthy, opens with a woman in peril. Vulnerable Dani is alone in her isolated, half-renovated home while her psychiatrist husband Ted works a night shift in a city hospital.
A self-professed psychic, who is also blind, Darcy then turns up on Ted’s doorstep requesting a bed for the night and carrying a housewarming gift from her stockroom: an enormous wooden mannequin of a screaming man. The Icelandic filmmaker is best known for high-octane studio action adventures like 2 Guns and Everest. Here he returns to the character-driven romance of his early films 101 Reykjavik and The Sea with a Covid-set drama of lost love and last chances, fading memory and indelible regret, adapted by the director and Impac-nominated author Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson from the latter’s novel.
Long flashbacks, photographed in a distinctive sepia, chronicle the story of young Kristofer and Miko , daughter of the restaurant owner Takahashi-san where, disenchanted by his studies, Kristofer gets a job.
