Analysis: Does it matter if Democratic presumptive nominee Joe Biden picks a woman of colour as his running mate? And how will such a decision shape the contest against Donald Trump on November 3? | FarrahTomazin
In late April, a group of black women leaders from across the US wrote to Democratic presumptive nominee Joe Biden asking him to “seize this moment” in America’s history.
Choosing from an initial field of 13 female candidates, two frontrunners are believed to be Kamala Harris, a Senator of Indian-Jamaican descent who used to be California's attorney-general; and Susan Rice, Barack Obama's former national security adviser and the daughter of the second black governor of the Federal Reserve System.
For Biden – a former VP to Obama who staged a remarkable comeback in the Democratic primaries largely because of the support of the black community – history is unlikely to repeat itself. What's more, coronavirus and the pandemic-fuelled recession have further exacerbated the health and economic disparities between white and non-white communities.
“After yesterday’s statement, Sleepy Joe Biden is no longer worthy of the Black Vote!” Trump tweeted in response on Friday. At the very least, Biden’s commitment to have a female running mate – and potentially a woman of colour – is a sign that things are shifting.Bloomberg
