Flavien Prat passes Juan Hernandez on final day to win jockey's title, guides Regal Glory to a repeat in the Matriarch Stakes
Jockey champion Flavien Prat capped a six-win day by riding defending champion Regal Glory to a 5¼-length victory in the Grade I Matriarch Stakes on Sunday as Del Mar closed its ninth fall meeting.
But Regal Glory — who scored a 13th win in 23 career starts, including four Grade I wins starting with the 2021 Matriarch — turned it on on the far turn and pulled away after passing the fading Hamwood Flier in the stretch. “Regal Glory broke a little slow and Prat tried to relax her on the backstretch,” said Jose Hernandez, Brown’s assistant at Del Mar. “I didn’t worry about that. Those kinds of fillies just kick off and it was amazing. We’re going to miss her at the track. We’ve had a lot of nice moments, a lot of nice races.”
Prat’s six wins Sunday gave him 24 for the meeting — and four more than defending fall meeting champion Juan Hernandez, who didn’t win a race Sunday after entering the final day with a two-race lead over Prat. “He broke well and I thought I was going to be on the lead,” said Prat. “But Umberto wanted to go, so we were fine running second. My horse was relaxed and that’s what I wanted. When it came time, he went about his business. Two turns was no problem.”
One-third of D’Amato’s entries won, giving him a third straight training title, including two straight fall titles. “We focused on this meet,” said D’Amato.
