Joaquin Phoenix is again teaming with Midsommar director Ari Aster on the filmmaker’s next movie, which is expected to be a Western. Coming off the one-two punch of Hereditary and Midsommar, Aster in 2021 lined up Oscar-winner Phoenix for the lead role in what at the time was a mysterious project known as Disappointment Blvd., but was later titled Beau is Afraid.

As Aster himself told the New York Times in a big profile, he is ready to reteam with Phoenix for his Beau is Afraid follow-up, which he says will “almost certainly” be a Western. Why Aster And Phoenix Are Such A Perfect Pairing Phoenix of course has a long track-record of memorably teaming up with acclaimed directors, from Paul Thomas Anderson to Ridley Scott to James Gray to James Mangold. But Phoenix’s pairing with Beau is Afraid helmer Aster might be the most perfect of all his directorial collaborations.
Phoenix of course is known as an actor who loves to challenge his audience, and at times even invite them to hate him, as he did in his memorable faux-documentary I’m Still Here. Tellingly, when Phoenix finally won his Best Actor Oscar, it was not for a typical ingratiating Oscar-bait movie, it was for Joker.
Given Aster’s own love of pushing his audience’s buttons with movies like the shocking Hereditary and the outright bizarre Midsommar, it should come as no surprise that he and Phoenix seem to be on the same page as director and actor. Beau is Afraid will soon display the fruits of this team’s artistic collaboration, and it’s heartening to know that a second team-up is already in the pipeline, so they can build on what looks to be a beautiful filmmaking friendship.
