Heath Ledger's Joker and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker
Joaquin Phoenix has revealed that he could have played the Joker years before he did, starring opposite Christian Bale in The Dark Knight, which did not work out in the end. Phoenix led two Joker movies, with the first one breaking the $1 billion mark to become a major hit. However, Joker: Folie à Deux bombed at the box office, seeing mostly negative reviews from critics and the audience alike.
According to Phoenix, Nolan came to him about the Batman villain, though the actor does not remember if the director was set on him playing the character. In the end, Phoenix explains that it did not work out because he was not ready for the Joker at the time. Heath Ledger would then become perhaps the best live-action Joker thanks to his performance in The Dark Knight, winning a posthumous Oscar for his role.
