Legacy Motor Club, the NASCAR team formerly owned by Richard Petty and now run by seven-time champ Jimmie Johnson and businessman Maury Gallagher, will leave Chevrolet at the end of the season and run Toyotas in 2024. That means the legendary number 43 will be on a Camry for the first time ever.
It's a big move, but one that actually makes a good amount of sense. Currently, Chevrolet has 16 full-time cars among eight teams in NASCAR's top series. Toyota has six cars with two teams. Legacy's move to Toyota will give Toyota eight full-time cars, but more importantly, it'll become one of Toyota's marquee teams in the series, and all the attention, R&D, and engineering help that comes with that.
For Toyota, this will be the most cars that they've had on the grid since 2011, and the manufacturers seem suitably excited about the change. For Johnson, this will be his first time working with Toyota, as all seven of his championships came driving Chevys for Hendrick Motorsports. Both of Legacy's full-time drivers, Erik Jones and Noah Gragson, have history with Toyota. Gragson made his NASCAR Truck and Xfinity series debuts in Toyotas, while Jones raced for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Cup series in a Toyota. That could have been a factor in the signing of the team.
It's a big get for Toyota, which right now has Joe Gibbs Racing and its satellite 23XI team, the team co-owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, in its stable.
