It has been an eventful training camp for the New York Jets' offensive line. But Mekhi Becton is starting to look like a pleasant surprise.

Becton sat down on the bench with a blank expression on his face. There was more work to be done. But after the way the big man played on this night, playing right tackle for the first time in pads since the start of training camp, one thing was certain: whatever work comes over the next 22 days between now and the start of the regular season should include Becton competing for a starting job.

But it was still an impressive workload considering Becton had not played a single snap at right tackle in team drills before Thursday, in a padless practice. And he played three additional snaps there were negated by penalties from a teammate. “[It was] great,” Zach Wilson said of having Becton on his right flank for the first time. “I didn’t get touched. It’s hard to point to just him because I’m not, obviously, focused on just him during the game, but I think all of those guys did an awesome job and I’m excited for him to be healthy and back out there and he’s in great shape, so I’m excited for all those guys that got to run tonight. Every time we step out on the field, it’s a great opportunity for us.

Yes, it was against the second-teamers for the Bucs, and yes Becton still has a whole lot of questions to answer between now and the start of the regular season. And there is still much work to be done, even after Becton worked tirelessly to change his lifestyle and lose a significant amount of weight this offseason. Most importantly, he needs to continue to prove that he can stay on the field.
